Hide and seek
Sunday, March 16, 2025
Each day is like opening a book
Each day is like opening a book
and finding another poem
waiting for you
sunlight or clouds on the page
shadows or raindrops
the sound of the wind
the silence of snow falling
of clouds passing by
each morning a different poem
lighthearted or sad
a moody melody
a gleeful reprise
the moment you open your eyes
you can hear
the song of a new day
words filling your ears
sounds you never heard before
syllables that roll off your tongue
letters spilling onto the page
one after the other
a stream in flood
pulling you into the day
filling your lungs with air
with life, with gratitude
for whatever appears
on the page
beneath your pen

What do you do when you run out of words?
What do you do
when you run
out of words
and all your ideas
have dried up?
I keep writing anyway,
afraid to stop on the
chance I may find more
words hidden where
I can't see them.
I don't want to lose
any time, don't want to
miss a single word,
keep hoping I'll find
some meaning
in it all.
In life, I mean, and
maybe in writing, too,
some idea that gives
it all a shape that
I can understand.

The future has yet to be written
I don't know where I'm going
the future is unknown
a sheaf of days
that have yet to be written
blank pages
waiting for words
the words hidden
somewhere in the future
perhaps stored in a pen
I have yet to pick up
peeking out from beneath a nib
waiting to be discovered
or compressed into the charcoal lead
of a #2 pencil, the way diamonds
are pressed beneath stones
waiting for the pressure of
my hand moving across
the page to release them

Where do you go from here?
Where do you go
from here? How do you
know which path to take?
What if you can't see a path
yet? How do you know how
to carve a new one?
Where does this knowledge
come from? When did you learn
to have faith in yourself
so you could dive into
the unknown
thinking--
believing--
you could discover
pearls hidden beneath
the surface?
Pearls that you find on occasion,
not every time you dive,
yet you keep diving
keep hoping
you'll find more
waiting for you
by the time
you reach the bottom
of the page?

You reach a point
You reach a point when your mind
goes blank like a blackboard that's
been erased, only chalk dust clinging
to the board but no words
and you stare into the blankness
wondering where the words went
and if they'll ever appear again,
and suddenly a word--
or the shadow of a word --
appears, just a glimmer,
but you see it
and grab hold,
and suddenly it's like pulling open
a flood gate you didn't even know
was there, and the words come
spilling onto the page again
splashing and splattering the page,
filling the page with words that only
moments ago were hidden, invisible,
nowhere to be found.

Gifts from the sea
Some days words come unbidden
sailing onto the page like tiny boats
blown by the wind.
Some days the page remains blank,
empty, like a cloudless sky, like a vast
ocean with a distant horizon past
which you cannot see.
Some days you can only hear waves
washing against the shore, the fog
too thick to see anything.
Some days you look for shells,
hoping to find a word or story or poem
hidden inside, and you put it to your ear
to listen.
Some days you wait and wait
like a fisherman waiting for a tug
on his line wondering what's hidden
beneath the surface, wondering if
anything is there.
Some days rain falls so hard
you can't tell the difference between
sea and sky.
Some days the sun is so strong
the light blinds your eyes.
Some days you open your arms
to heaven and words appear--you don't
know why--and you gather them up,
as many as you can hold, gifts from the sea
to share with the world.

It's quiet this morning
Poems are hiding lately--
playing hide-and-seek
over the past few weeks--
unwilling to answer
the door when I knock.
Are they sleeping
or just shy?
Too tired to play
or busy working
on a secret project?
The page is lonely and
sad without words
running across it today,
words chasing words
playing tag and peek-a-boo
laughter and cries of glee
rising from the page.
It's quiet this morning
the page wrapped in silence
the words still asleep
hibernating
waiting, perhaps,
for spring
